In this blog entry, the Los Angeles Area and Inland Empire garage door service experts here at Garage Door Stars will detail the answers to some frequently asked questions we commonly receive about garage door opener installation and the range of garage door services that we provide our clients.

What features should I look for in a garage door opener?

  • Backup batteries
  • Encrypted codes
  • Quiet operation
  • Dual frequency remotes

Should I repair or replace my garage door?

Usually garage doors should ast around 20 years. If your garage door is older than that or has experienced damage, it’s probably time to replace it. Usually small issues in garage doors under 20 years old only require repair service.

How much headroom do I need above my garage door?

If you have a garage that uses extension springs, you need at least 10 inches of headroom. If your garage uses torsion springs, you need a minimum of 12-15 inches, but it may be different based on how high the door is and what its style is.

Can I reprogram my garage remote after a power outage?

Yes. First, make sure the door is lowered, and if it is open, use the emergency release cord to lower it down. Then, run the door and remote through an open close cycle by hitting the garage door opener to fully open and close the door.

How many garage door opener motor sizes are available?

The majority of garage door openers come in .5 and .75 horsepower. A balanced garage door shouldn’t be heavier than 10 pounds, and should be able to be lifted with a single hand. For example, a .75 horsepower garage door opener has enough power to move a garage door that weighs even 350lbs!

Can I make sure nobody can open my garage door when I’m on vacation?

Some garages have special control panels that allow you to block out the signal from all remotes to prevent unauthorized garage access while you can operate the garage from the panel. You could consider unplugging your garage owner when you leave. All you will have to do is plug it back in and reprogram the opener when you return.

Can I purchase a backup battery for my garage door opener?

Yes, you can purchase a special backup battery for many garage door opener models that provides around 20 hours of operation time in the event of a power outage.
